Prices
Mahé is about 27 km long, and most of it is best seen by car. The buses are cheap but slow, and taxis add up quickly over a week. With your own car you can reach the beaches on the south coast in the morning, cross the mountains on the Sans Souci road and be in Beau Vallon for sunset.
Traffic keeps to the left. Roads are narrow, often without a shoulder, and the mountain crossings have tight hairpins. The island speed limit is 40 km/h in town and 65 km/h elsewhere. If you’d rather look at the view, book the rental with a driver.
The Hyundai i10 is the budget choice for two: tiny, thrifty and easy to park anywhere. The new 2025 Suzuki Dzire suits couples who want a proper boot. It’s small, economical, easy to park in Victoria and has Apple CarPlay for your maps and music. The Geely EX5 EM-i is a full-option plug-in hybrid SUV with room for a family and their luggage. The Toyota Urban Cruiser is a 2024 compact SUV with five seats and higher seating, comfortable on the steep mountain roads.
